Drifter Peter Doig

This two-colour photo etching shows a half-obscured cowboy in the middle of a quiet landscape. Peter creates a sense of nostalgia for a romantic American past. His composition draws attention to a spiritual plane of existence which gives his work a magic feel – as if memory and dreams are intertwined.

Peter Doig

Peter was born in Edinburgh but moved to Trinidad with his family at the age of three, then to Canada four years later. He returned to the UK as a teenager to study at Wimbledon College of Art, Central Saint Martins and Chelsea School of Art. He moved back to Trinidad in 2002 to set up the Caribbean Contemporary Arts Centre and later became a professor at the Fine Arts Academy in Dusseldorf. Major retrospectives of his work have been held at Tate Britain, the Paris Museum of Modern Art and the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt.
