Summary

Model with Black Jacket Craigie Aitchison

Craigie painted Gorgeous Macauley a number of times in the 1960's and 1970's. This deceptively simple portrait on a plain background captures the model’s physical presence accurately. The colours and composition reflect the inspiration he draws from London’s black community, exploring aspects of metropolitan life often overlooked by other artists.

Biography

Craigie Aitchison

Craigie grew up in Kincardine-on-Forth, Scotland, and this childhood spent on the Holy Isle in the Firth of Clyde influenced his work later in life. He went on to study at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1952 and was elected member of the Royal Academy of Art in 1988. Craigie’s contribution to the art word was recognised with a CBE in 1999.
