Study (The Patriot+King Arthur+Conan the Barbarian) Jim Gaylord

Jim collects film stills from big budget action movies to create compositions and paintings using oil and watercolours. In this work he creates a single image by painting two sheets of acetate and one of paper individually in watercolours prepared with gum. David then places the work on a registration peg to resemble a traditional animation, building the layers so that they become distilled and suspended in time.

Jim studied Fine Art at Berkeley and Film at the University of North Carolina. He received the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant in 2005 and was a Fellow in Painting for the New York Foundation for the Arts in 2008. He lives and works in New York.
